ATHLETIC FUNDING
There has been some discussion
in the community about the
athletic department being able
to totally fund athletics since
we have recently been very
successful. There is basically
two types of funding for the
athletic program - Athletic and
General Fund monies.
Athletic Fund revenues (listed
below) for the school year
2004-2005 fell short of
expenditures by about $4000. We
did, however, have a carryover
from the year before that
enabled the athletic department
to end the year with a positive
balance. For this school year,
the Athletic Fund revenues are
in the black heading into the
Spring athletic season but
expenses to be incurred for
Spring sports will keep the
financial picture from being
complete.
The General Fund pays for the
supplemental contracts for
coaching, transportation,
utilities and other areas
associated with athletics. These
expenditures total well over
$163,000 which would mean that
if the athletic department also
funded these it would have to
bring in at least 3 times its
average amount just to break
even. Also, please keep in mind
that if you see a number of
coaches involved with a
particular sport or team it does
not mean that they are all being
paid. We have a number of
volunteer coaches and some who
will share a supplemental
contract.
The Adena Board of Education has
decided to start a
Pay-To-Participate program for
the district’s extracurricular
programs. The board understands
they cannot require a fee from
each participant that would make
up the total costs associated
with these activities. In the
near future, the district will
be releasing more information
pertaining to Pay-To-Participate
which will not be in effect
until the Fall of 2006.
